About Vallauris

Vallauris, located on the French Riviera between Cannes and Antibes, is renowned for its centuries-old tradition of pottery and ceramics and its rich artistic heritage.

The town became an important centre of modern ceramic art in the 20th century, particularly with the arrival of Pablo Picasso, who lived and worked in Vallauris from 1948 to 1955. His presence contributed to the revival of local ceramics and attracted a new generation of artists. Roger Capron, Gilbert Portanier and Roger Derval were among the influential figures who helped establish Vallauris as an international centre for ceramic art.

Today, this heritage remains an essential part of the town’s identity. Picasso’s bronze sculpture Man with a Sheep stands in the historic centre, while the Musée National Picasso houses his monumental work War and Peace, created specifically for the chapel of the Château de Vallauris.
